A memorial arrangement we built and placed for a Clark County family. Our work, not stock.
People use these terms interchangeably, but for flowers the difference is real and it changes what you need.
The casket is present. The flowers are built around it: a casket spray on the lid, standing pieces flanking it, and arrangements filling out the rest of the room.
The casket sets the scale. Everything else is sized to work with it.
The casket is not present. The service is usually held after cremation, or after burial has already taken place, and often weeks or months later so family can travel.
There is nothing to build around, so the flowers do a different job. They give the room a focal point, mark the memory table, and make a plain hall feel like a place where something meaningful is happening.
Not sure which one you are planning? Call us and describe the service. We will tell you what you actually need. (360) 984-8059
Without a casket, the flowers have four jobs. Most memorial services need three or four pieces total, depending on the size of the room.
The visual center of the service. This is where people look, where they pause, and where photographs get taken. It carries the most weight of anything you order.
Most memorial services have a table of photos, keepsakes, and mementos. One or two lower arrangements frame it without crowding out the things people came to look at.
An arrangement where guests come in. This is the piece families forget, and it is the one that makes a rented hall stop feeling like a rented hall the moment someone walks through the door.
Tall arrangements on easels that give height and fill the front of the room. How many depends on the space. A chapel needs fewer than a wide community hall.
Memorial services happen in places that were not designed for them, and that is the part most florists do not plan for.
Funeral home chapels are built for this. They have the right lighting, a natural focal point, and a scale everyone understands. Memorial services often are not held there. They happen in church halls, community rooms, wineries, park shelters, and living rooms.
Those rooms have ceilings that are too high or too low, windows in the wrong place, and no obvious front. Arrangements that would look right in a chapel can disappear entirely in a wide, bright hall.
So we ask about the venue before we design anything. How big is the room, where will people sit, where is the urn or the portrait going, and what is the light doing at that hour.
If you are a friend or a coworker rather than immediate family, the situation is a little different.
Our order minimum is two to three pieces, so a single small arrangement is not something we can do well. If you are sending on your own, the honest advice is to go in with others. Four coworkers on one substantial standing piece looks far better in the room than four small vases scattered around the edges.
Call us with the service details and who is contributing. We will tell you what that budget actually buys and put a card on it with everyone's names.
If you want something smaller sent to the family's home instead, a general florist in the area will serve you better than we will, and we will say so.
Every service is different and every order is priced to match. These are what we typically see families spend, with design, delivery, and setup included.
A home, a graveside, or an intimate memorial. Typically a piece beside the urn and one or two supporting arrangements.
Where most memorial services land. Urn or portrait piece, memory table arrangements, an entry piece, and standing florals through the space.
Large churches, multiple rooms, or a reception space alongside the service. Depends on the size of the space and what the family wants.
These are what we see most families spend. Not packages to choose from. Tell us your budget on the call and we will work within it.
Call (360) 984-8059More than six in ten Americans are now cremated, and that number keeps climbing. When there is no casket and no burial to schedule around, families stop being held to a three-day timeline. They pick a date that works, they wait for people to fly in, and they hold the service somewhere that meant something to the person who died.
That is a better way to do it in a lot of ways. It also means the flowers have to work harder. Nobody walks into a community center and immediately understands they are at a memorial. The room has to be made to say that, and flowers are most of how that happens.
We are a funeral-only florist, which means this is not a sideline for us. Every arrangement is designed and built by hand for one specific service. We deliver, we place everything ourselves before guests arrive, and we send you a photo so you see the room before you walk into it.
If you are planning a memorial service anywhere in Clark County or the Portland metro, call us at (360) 984-8059. You can also look at celebration of life flowers if the service is meant to be a lighter, more personal one, or sympathy flowers if you are sending a tribute rather than arranging the service. Our recent work is on the gallery page.
Call us with the date, the venue, and a little about the person. We will take it from there.
